How may we help you?

All Antelope Audio Thunderbolt devices currently use our Unified Driver on macOS, which is based on Apple's Kernel Extension (KEXT) technology.
During installation, macOS may display warnings indicating that Apple plans to phase out Kernel Extensions in the future. These messages have understandably raised questions about long-term compatibility.

Current Status

At this time (July, 2026), Apple has not announced an official timeline for the removal of Kernel Extension support.
While macOS displays warnings regarding the future of Kernel Extensions, there is currently no confirmed macOS version in which they will stop working.
Our Unified Driver remains fully supported on current macOS releases, including macOS Tahoe.
Based on currently available information, support is also expected to continue in the upcoming macOS 27 release.

Future Apple Changes

If Apple decides to discontinue Kernel Extension support, the change would occur as part of a future macOS release.
Historically, Apple provides advance notice before removing major technologies from the operating system. We expect Apple to announce any such transition before enforcement takes place.
As of today, no official announcement has been made regarding the removal of Kernel Extension functionality.

Antelope Audio's Next-Generation Driver

To prepare for future macOS changes, Antelope Audio is actively developing a new driver based on Apple's DriverKit and System Extension technologies.

The new driver architecture will provide several benefits, including:

  • A significantly simpler installation process
  • No need to boot into Recovery Mode
  • No need to reduce macOS security settings
  • Improved user experience and system integration

We are targeting initial beta releases in the second half of 2026.

What If Apple Removes Kernel Extensions?

Even in the unlikely event that Apple announces the immediate end of Kernel Extension support, the change would only affect a future macOS release.

If that happens, users can continue using their existing Antelope Audio devices and drivers simply by remaining on their current macOS version until the new DriverKit-based driver becomes available.

We recommend reviewing compatibility information before installing a major macOS update.
If Apple announces changes affecting Kernel Extensions, simply avoid updating to the affected macOS version until Antelope Audio releases the corresponding DriverKit-based driver.

There is currently no official announcement regarding the end of Kernel Extension support in macOS.
Our existing Unified Driver continues to work on supported macOS versions, we are actively developing a next-generation DriverKit-based solution to ensure long-term compatibility and a smoother installation experience.
